1. Introduction
This Privacy Policy ("Policy") describes how the Spectral Text application ("Application", "we", "our") collects, uses, stores, and protects user information ("User", "you", "your").
By using the Application, you agree to the terms of this Policy. If you do not agree to the terms of this Policy, please do not use the Application.
We are committed to protecting your privacy and processing your data in accordance with applicable data protection laws, including but not limited to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), and other applicable laws.
2. Data Controller
The controller of your personal data is the developer of the Spectral Text application.

3. Information Collected
The Application is designed with user privacy as a priority. We collect and process only the minimum necessary amount of information required for the Application to function.
3.1. Automatically Collected Information
The Application does not collect personal data automatically without your explicit action. However, to ensure the functionality of certain features, the Application may process the following information:

Audio Recordings: When using the speech-to-text feature, the Application records audio through your device's built-in microphone. Audio recordings are processed exclusively on your device or transmitted to third-party speech recognition services for conversion to text. We do not store audio recordings on our servers.

Text Transcriptions: Text obtained from speech recognition is saved locally on your device in the
transcriptions.json file to provide access to transcription history.

User Files: Files you open in the Application (TXT, MD, PDF formats and other supported formats) are saved locally in the Application's documents directory on your device.

Usage Metadata: The Application saves locally information about usage sessions (start and end times of sessions), recording history, opened file history, file reading settings, onboarding progress, and usage statistics. All such data is stored exclusively on your device.
3.2. Information We Do Not Collect
We do not collect or process the following information:
- Name, surname, email address, or other identifying information (unless you explicitly provide it)
- Location (geolocation)
- Contacts or phone book
- Information about other applications on your device
- Information about internet activity outside the Application
- Biometric data
- Financial information
4. Legal Basis for Data Processing
We process your data on the following legal bases:

Consent: By using Application features that require access to the microphone or files, you give your explicit consent to process the relevant data for the purposes of these features' functionality.

Contract Performance: Data processing is necessary to provide you with Application functionality in accordance with its terms of use.

Legitimate Interests: We may process data to ensure security, prevent fraud, and improve Application functionality, provided that such interests do not violate your fundamental rights and freedoms.
5. Use of Information
We use collected information exclusively for the following purposes:
- Providing Core Application Features: Speech-to-text conversion, file reading, text-to-speech, saving and managing transcriptions and files.
- Improving User Experience: Saving settings, usage history, and user preferences to provide a personalized experience.
- Ensuring Technical Functionality: Checking for Application updates through the Expo Updates service, processing audio through built-in operating system capabilities.
- Compliance with Legal Obligations: When required by applicable law.
We do not use your data for:
- Marketing or advertising to third parties
- Selling your data to third parties
- Profiling or creating advertising profiles
- Transferring data for commercial purposes without your explicit consent
6. Data Storage
6.1. Local Storage
All data processed by the Application is stored exclusively locally on your device in the following locations:
- AsyncStorage: Settings, recording history, file history, usage sessions, onboarding progress, usage statistics.
- File System (Documents Directory): User files (TXT, MD, PDF, etc.), saved transcriptions (the
transcriptions.json file).
- Cache Directory: Temporary files, cache, audio recordings created for sharing purposes.
We do not have access to data stored on your device and do not transmit this data to our servers or third-party servers (except as described in Section 7).
6.2. Retention Period
Data is stored on your device until:
- You delete it through Application functionality
- You delete the Application from your device (in which case all data associated with the Application is deleted along with the Application)
- You clear Application data through operating system settings
We do not set automatic data retention periods, as all data is stored locally under your control.
7. Third-Party Data Transfer
To ensure Application functionality, we may transfer data to the following third-party services:
7.1. Speech Recognition Services
For speech-to-text conversion, the Application uses built-in speech recognition services of operating systems:

Android: Google Speech Recognition API (provided by Google LLC). When using this feature, audio data is transmitted to Google for processing. Processing is carried out in accordance with Google's Privacy Policy.

iOS: Apple Speech Recognition Framework (provided by Apple Inc.). When using this feature, audio data may be transmitted to Apple for processing. Processing is carried out in accordance with Apple's Privacy Policy.
Important: We do not control data processing by third-party speech recognition services. We recommend reviewing the privacy policies of these services before using the speech-to-text feature.
7.2. Update Services
To provide automatic updates, the Application uses the Expo Updates service provided by Expo (Expo Inc.), available at https://u.expo.dev. When checking for updates, the following data may be transmitted to the service:
- Application project identifier (EAS Project ID)
- Application version (runtime version)
- Update channel
Data processing by the Expo Updates service is carried out in accordance with Expo's Privacy Policy.
7.3. Text-to-Speech Services
For text-to-speech functionality, the Application uses built-in capabilities of operating systems (Text-to-Speech):

Android: Built-in Android TTS engine, which may use Google TTS services. Data processing is carried out in accordance with the TTS engine manufacturer's privacy policy.

iOS: Built-in AVSpeechSynthesizer from Apple. Data processing is carried out in accordance with Apple's Privacy Policy.
7.4. General Terms of Third-Party Data Transfer
We transfer data to third parties only in the following cases:
- It is necessary to ensure Application functionality
- The third party acts as a data processor on our behalf and is required to comply with data processing terms similar to this Policy
- Data transfer is required by applicable law or by request of competent authorities
We do not sell, rent, or transfer your personal data to third parties for their own marketing or commercial purposes without your explicit consent.
8. Device Permissions
To ensure functionality, the Application requests the following permissions:
8.1. iOS

NSMicrophoneUsageDescription: Microphone access is necessary for recording voice messages and transcribing them to text. The microphone is activated only upon explicit user action (pressing the record button).

NSSpeechRecognitionUsageDescription: Speech recognition access is necessary for converting voice messages to text through Apple Speech Recognition Framework.

NSPhotoLibraryUsageDescription / NSPhotoLibraryAddUsageDescription: Description added to comply with requirements of some libraries used. The Application does not use photo library access for its features.
8.2. Android

RECORD_AUDIO: Audio recording permission is necessary for recording voice messages and transcribing them to text.

READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE / WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE: File read and write permissions are necessary for opening user files (TXT, MD, PDF, etc.), saving transcriptions and files.

MODIFY_AUDIO_SETTINGS: Permission to modify audio settings is necessary to ensure optimal quality of voice message recording.
All permissions are requested only when necessary and only after explicit user action requiring the use of the corresponding feature. You can revoke permissions at any time through your device's operating system settings.
9. Data Security
We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your data from unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction:

Local Storage: All data is stored locally on your device and protected by built-in operating system security mechanisms (disk encryption, application access protection, application data isolation).

Data Minimization: We collect and process only the minimum necessary amount of data to ensure Application functionality.

No Network Transmission: User personal data (audio recordings, transcriptions, files) is not transmitted over the network to our servers or third-party servers (except as described in Section 7.1, when data is transmitted to third-party speech recognition services at your explicit request).
Important: Despite the security measures taken, no method of data transmission over the internet or method of electronic storage is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security of your data, but we are committed to using all reasonably available means to protect it.
In the event of a data breach that may cause harm to your rights and freedoms, we will immediately notify you and the relevant supervisory authorities in accordance with applicable law.
10. Your Rights
In accordance with applicable data protection laws, you have the following rights regarding your data:

Right of Access: You have the right to obtain information about what data is processed by the Application. All data is stored locally on your device, and you can access it through Application functionality or directly through the device's file system.

Right to Rectification: You can modify or correct data saved in the Application at any time through the corresponding editing features.

Right to Erasure: You can delete any data saved in the Application through the deletion functionality in the Application, or by deleting the Application from your device, which will result in deletion of all associated data.

Right to Restriction of Processing: You can stop using Application features that require data processing by revoking the corresponding permissions in operating system settings.

Right to Data Portability: You can export your data (transcriptions, files) through the sharing functionality in the Application to transfer to another device or store elsewhere.

Right to Object: You can object to the processing of your data by stopping the use of corresponding Application features or by deleting the Application.

Right to Withdraw Consent: You can withdraw your consent to data processing at any time by deleting the Application or revoking the corresponding permissions.
To exercise your rights, you can use Application functionality or contact us using the contact information provided in Section 14. We will review your request within a reasonable time, but no later than one month from the date of receipt.
You also have the right to file a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority if you believe that the processing of your data violates applicable law.
11. Children
The Application is not intended for children under 13 years of age (in some jurisdictions, the age may differ, for example, 16 years under GDPR). We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13 years of age without the knowledge and consent of parents or legal guardians.
If you are a parent or legal guardian and know that your child has provided us with personal data without your consent, please contact us using the contact information provided in Section 14. We will immediately delete such information from our records (provided that it is not stored only locally on the child's device).
12. Changes to Privacy Policy
We reserve the right to update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our data processing methods or for other operational, legal, or regulatory reasons.
We will notify you of significant changes to this Policy by:
- Publishing the updated version of the Policy on this page
- Updating the "Last updated" date at the beginning of this Policy
- Notification through the Application (if possible)
We recommend that you periodically review this Policy to learn about how we protect your data. Your continued use of the Application after publication of changes means your agreement with the updated Policy.
13. International Data Transfer
Since all data is stored locally on your device, we do not conduct international data transfer to our servers.
However, when using speech recognition features, data may be transferred to the following countries:
- United States (when using Google Speech Recognition on Android)
- United States and other countries (when using Apple Speech Recognition on iOS)
Such transfer is carried out by third-party speech recognition services in accordance with their privacy policies. We do not control and are not responsible for data processing by these services.
